Es una infección del oído que generalmente es causada por inflamación e infección del oído medio (otitis media), el cual se encuentra localizado justo detrás del tímpano. Suele ser más frecuente en niños pero también se da en adultos.

La inflamación en el oído la causa un virus o bacteria que da lugar a una acumulación de fluido detrás del tímpano. La infección genera presión sobre la trompa de Eustaquio, lo que provoca dolor de oído, tumefacción y enrojecimiento. Esta afección puede resultar de un resfriado, alergia o una infección respiratoria.

Un sistema inmunitario fuerte ayuda a prevenir las infecciones que provocan la otitis. Los complementos alimenticios con micronutrientes como la vitamina C fortalecen el sistema inmunitario. Algunas recomendaciones son: no usar bastoncillos para la higiene de los oído, realizar una higiene nasal y aspiración de los mocos, evitará que éstos se acumulen en la trompa de Eustaquio y durante el baño evita la entrada de agua y jabón en los oídos.

La otitis media es una enfermedad que afecta sobre todo al grupo de edad comprendido entre los 0 y 7 años. A partir de esta edad la incidencia disminuye de manera significativa, sin necesidad de tratamiento farmacológico. Si se cronifican, es recomendable acudir a un especialista médico para que paute el tratamiento más adecuado.
